Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was mustered in as an Ensign (2nd Lieutenant) in Company F, 4th New Jersey Militia on April 27, 1861, and served in the defenses of Washington, DC and in reserve during the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign before being mustered out on July 31, 1861. Commissioned then as a Captain in the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, he was mustered in as commander of Company C on September 9, 1861, and served leading the unit until he resigned due to disability on January 14, 1863. When New Jersey raised Independent Militia companies to meet crisis to Pennsylvania caused by the invasion of that state by the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, Timothy Moore accepted the second in command of on of those units, serving as a 1st lieutenant from June 17, 1863 to July 17, 1863. A few weeks later be was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 34th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry (September 24, 1863), and served in this duty through the end of the war. While the regiment was assigned to post-war occupation duty in the south, he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment on November 8, 1865. His Union Army service finally came to an end on April 30,. 1866 when he and his regiment was mustered out of service - the last from the state of New Jersey. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on November 11, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
