When Verle Wesley Penfold was born on July 1, 1900, in Burlington, Colorado, his father, Frank, was 29 and his mother, Della (Teagarden) Penfold, was 27. He married Joy Hazel McLachlan on November 25, 1922, in Longmont, Colorado. They had two children during their marriage, both were very industrious. Verle always enjoyed building model trains as well as ships in a bottle in his spare time but his real passion was flying, Verle owned his own plane and on June 2, 1963, in a storm his life was cut short when his plane crashed in Williams Peak, Grand County, Colorado, at the young age of 62.
