My beautiful Great Grandmother, Sarah Alice Evans, was one of 16 to 18 children born to Ezer Evans (1843-1918) and Mary Ellen McKay (1848-1926). Sarah was born in Neosho County, Kansas in 1879. Her parents Ezer and Mary Ellen, married in Hickory County, Missouri in 1864. Ezer Evans was born in 1843 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi. With his family, he left Mississippi for Trigg County, Kentucky, and then on to Missouri by 1860.

The Evans family wagon, one of many among a long wagon train, left Coffeyville, Montgomery County, Kansas in 1879. My cousin Jo said the families traveled through Colorado and Utah. Our Evans family then stopped for a short time in Nevada. While in Nevada, father Ezer Evans and some of the older boys worked to earn money to continue their journey west. I have not determined where in Nevada my Evans family stopped to work. Life along the trail was not easy, and many families stopped along the trail in places to work to help pay for support of their families. When leaving Nevada, the Evans family continued on to Wallowa County, Oregon, and settled near the town of Joseph in the summer of 1880. It is unknown if any other families followed them, or if they were alone in their arrival in Wallowa County.

The Stockham family also settled in the Joseph and Prairie Creek areas of Wallowa County, having come from Missouri in 1875. The Stockham and Evans family, along with many other families, worked in Idaho and Oregon, on sheep ranches and in the hop fields. They followed other families around the areas and traveled to where work was available in the 1880's. This practice was common, as the family traveled to find work to support their families.

After their arrival in Wallowa County, Oregon, some of the Stockham family settled in Valley County, Idaho, in the small town of Van Wyck. The Evans family were also moving between the Van Wyck, Idaho and Wallowa County, Oregon areas. After Sarah Alice Evans met William Stockham, they married in Van Wyck on 18 Oct 1899. The DeHaas family was also considered an early settler of the Van Wyck area and married into the Evans family.

Sarah (Evans) Stockham and William Stockham were close to Sarah's family of Evans, and her brother Pete Evans, married William Stockham's cousin Ara Dora Stockham. Ara Dora, known as Dora, was the daughter of William Stockham (1845-1905) and Martha Ellen Johnson. This William Stockham was the brother of John Albert Stockham (1843-1883) who married Sarah Johnson. John Albert and Sarah Johnson were parents of William Stockham, (1863-1913) who married Sarah Alice Evans. The Evans and Stockham families kept in touch with each other during their travels, and resided in many of the same areas throughout Idaho and Oregon. The Stockham family also sent letters to their family in Missouri, of which many were shared with other family.

William Stockham and Sarah Alice Evans had only five children before he died in 1913. The youngest child, Erma, was only six months old when her father William died in Caldwell, Idaho.
