He probably was apprenticed to his uncle Salathiel Cox who was a Philadelphia bricklayer. In 1861 - 1862 he and his father Jesse were listed as glassblowers living at 1208 North 8th St. (Military Service Enrollment Books, 1861 - 1862 Philadelphia 19th and 20th Wards, Page 155)
His first wife was Mary A. Hesselpoth. She died in 1862 of convulsions, less than a year after they married on July 9, 1861. This may have been complications of giving birth but we do not know.
He had three children. At least two of them (born 1868 and 1869) were with his second wife Mary A. who died in 1895 of breast cancer and is buried next to him.
His third wife was Julia D. Boulton. She died a year after him and she is buried in Northwood.
John was enumerated in the 1900 federal census at Pa, Bucks Co, West Rock Hill ED 45 Page No 2B Dwelling #43. In that record he is recorded as being born January 1832.
