Cyrus A. Dolph III, 78, a retired Army major general who led the first American troops to enter Paris during World War II, died April 29 in Mathews, Va. The cause of death was not reported.

Gen. Dolph served three years in the European Theater and won a Silver Star while commanding the 102nd Cavalry Group, Essex Troop, the first U.S. unit into Paris. He later served in Korea; as deputy director of the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington; as deputy chief of the military advisory group in Vietnam, and as chief of training operations for all of the Vietnamese armed forces. He retired about 1960.

Maj. Gen. Cyrus A. Dolph III, who commanded the first American troops to enter Paris in World War II, has died at age 78.

A service with full military honors was held for Gen. Dolph on Wednesday in Christ Church Cemetery. He died Monday.

A native of San Antonio, Gen. Dolph graduated in 1933 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He served three years in the European Theater in World War II. He won a Silver Star and a citation for commanding the 102d Cavalry Group, Essex Troop, the first U.S. unit to enter the French capital.

From 1946 to 1949, Gen. Dolph was an instructor at the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. He graduated from the Army War College in 1950 and was chief of Army war plans of the general staff in Washington from 1951 to 1954.

From 1956 to 1958, he was deputy director of the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington.

His last tour of duty before his retirement in 1960 was as deputy chief of the military advisory group in Vietnam and as chief of training operations for all of the Vietnamese armed forces

Maj. Gen. Cyrus A. Dolph 3d, 78, the officer who commanded the first American troops to enter Paris during World War II, died Monday in Mathews, Va.

He commanded the 102d Cavalry when it rolled into Paris in 1944. He was awarded the Silver Star . He went on to instruct at the Command and General Staff College, graduated from the War College and was chief of planning for the general staff during the Korean War.

He served in Korea in 1954 and 1955 and, from 1956 to 1958, was deputy director of the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His last tour of duty before his 1960 retirement was as deputy chief of the military advisory group in Vietnam and as chief of training operations for Vietnamese forces.
