Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball as an Outfielder and Pitcher for 9 seasons (1941-1942, 1946-1951) with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. Played in a total of 18 games for the Cardinal over the 1941 and 42 seasons before enlisting in the Military following Pearl Harbor. After three full years he returned to the Cardinals in 1946, and helped them to the World Series (he contributed to the Cardinals October 3rd Pennant winning game over the Brooklyn Dodgers). He batted .250 in the Series against the Boston Red Sox, appearing in 4 of the Games for the eventual Champion Cardinals. After batting .284 in 1947 his ability to hit Major League pitching fell sharply, and he was converted to a Pitcher/Outfielder. He found little success on the mound, never winning a game, and was traded to the Pirates in the middle of the 1951 season. He would play 20 games for Pittsburgh in 1952 before he was released, ending his career. His totals were 413 Games Played, 251 Hits, 168 Runs, 24 Home Runs, 106 RBIs, and a career .243 Batting Average. His pitching totals were 0 Wins-3 Losses, 23 Games Pitched, 26 Strike Outs and a 5.33 ERA. He earned the nickname “Four Sack” early in his career when he won a game with a Home Run.
