"Mathematician". Born in Odessa, he studied at Moscow University from 1915 to 1921. He was a specialist in topology: he produced Urysohn's Metrization Theorem and Urysohn's Lemma. He gave with Pavel Alexandrov the modern meaning of compactness (1923). He drowned while swimming in the wawes near Batz-sur-mer (Britany - France)
