Baseball Player. He broke into the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox in 1940, primarily as a second baseman, thus becoming Hall of Famer Luke Appling's double-play partner for a time. The right-handed batter led the American League with 40 doubles in 1942, but he missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons because of military service. He was traded to Detroit during the 1949 season and mainly played first base for the Tigers. He then was dealt to the Philadelphia Athletics after the 1952 season for Billy Hitchcock, but he played only two games for the A's. He had a career .271 average for 12 years in the big leagues.
