dwin often said that when he first say Marie Christine walking down the street in Criple Creek "She reminded me of a fine young racehorse the way she walked and carried herself". Marie was 17 at the time, living with her gold miner father, mother, brothers and sister. Having graduated from the 8th grade, she helped at home with the younger children, cooking and housework. In her free time she loved dancing and many of the recreational activitied suitable for young ladies of Cripple Creek.
How the young Canadina barber, edwin MacKay, managed to meet Marie isn't known, but when the decision was made by Peter Jessen to leave strike ridden Cripple Creek and return to Cheyenne, Marie and Ed knew htat they were in love. Ed was doing well as a barber in Victor, and the couple made plans to marry soon after the Jessen family moved back to Cheyenne.
They got married on 26 Dec, 1904 at the Jessen home. Rev Rafter of the Episcopal Church performed the ceremony. Afther the chivaree, the young couple took the train back to Victor where they set up housekeeping. There were happy years, and a son, Harry was born 12 Jan 1906.
However the prosperous years of the gold era were over in Cripple Creek and Victor, and the little family returned to Cheyenne where they lived in temp quarters at the back of the Jessen home. Ed found employment as a barber and they took their savings and built a house on the lot next ot the Jessens at 409 e. 10th st.
Soon Ed became partners with another barber named Arthur Vanegle in a shop advertised in the directory as "Newly Furnished, Barbers Supplies and Baths" at 221 w. 16th st. They even had a telephone number, 408 Black.
24 dec 1904: Marriage cert from Wy: Edwin McKay and Marie Christine Jessen. He lived in Teller Co, Colorado and she at Laramie Co. Wyoming. He was 24, she 19. Married at the Protestant Episcopal church. Witnessed by Richard Burke and Christine Jessen.
