William was the son of Eleanor Clifford Gilliland and John Wylie Purdum.
On December 31, 1868, he wed Sarah Clementine "Sallie" Gossage in Franklin County, Tennessee. She passed away in Grayson County in December 1890, and she is buried there as well. In 1890, William married Nancy Ellen Gossage in Grayson County, the sister of Sarah. Nancy is also buried in Cannon Cemetery.

William fathered 19 children in all (with Sarah, 9, and Nancy, 10). Only one burial, William's (1878–1881), is unidentified. He was Sarah's child.
