Death: Dec. 12, 1869

Mary was a daughter of Col. Benjamin Fassett and Harriet "Hetty" Schenck. She married the Rev. Gordon Hayes 25 April 1829 at Cambridge, Washington County, New York, while he was pastoring the Presbyterian Church there: his first pastorate. Within a year, they had moved to Washington, Litchfield County, Connecticut, when Gordon accepted a call to become pastor of the Congregational Church there, a position he held for 23 years. While there, they brought into the world seven children, every one of which made an impact on the world. They were:

Charles Gordon, alumni of Yale University, attorney, land agent, stock breeder, author and editor, who was wounded in the Civil War.

Adeline Heletia, "Ada," who became the second wife (of three) of Professor George Churchill, one of the founders of Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Mary Elizabeth, who graduated from the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, the oldest school established from inception (chartered in 1836) as an institution of higher education for women, then worked with and later married William Patterson Jones, who founded the Northwestern Female College in Evanston, Illinois, which was soon absorbed as the women's division of the all-male Northwestern University, and who served several years as U.S. Consul at Macao, Amoy and Canton in China before becoming Editor of the Chicago Interocean magazine.

Edward, attorney and partner of his older brother Charles in numerous business dealings.

John, who likewise was involved with his brothers in various promotions and business dealings, and was a successful farmer and stock breeder after being wounded in the Civil War.

Lydia Maria, "Lillie," who married the Rev. James Walter Waugh, and became with him an early missionary to India.

Daniel, land agent, promoter, developer, successful fsrmer and stock breeder.
