Just before going to press we heard of the death of Orson Crook of Smoot. Mr Crook has been ill for some time but was taken suddenly worse a few days ago and died as a result.
We reported last week that Orson Crook has passed from this life last Sunday afternoon. This week we have secured a brief sketch of his life and activities especially since he has lived in Star Valley.
Orson Crook was born in Bear Lake Valley about 63 years ago, being among the early settlers of that part of Idaho. His early life was spent in Fish haven, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Mary Winterbottom and to this union were born nine children, seven of whom are living, 2 sons and 5 daughters, they are: Sam and Hyrum Crook, Mrs Henry Erickson, Mrs Lizzie Johnson, Mrs Mable bruce, Mrs Helen Olson and Mrs Mildred Jensen. His occupation was ranching.
Funeral Services were held at the Smoot meeting house Thursday Dec 3. A large number of friends and relatives were in attendance.
Counselor G.W. Bruce opened the services.
Pres. Albert Barrus was the first speaker and made some very encouraging and consoling remarks to the bereaved.
W.W. Cranney, Bishop C.H. Peterson and Counselor Herbert Schwab all spoke of the good qualities of Bro. Crook as a father and grandfather a splendid neighbor. He was willing to help in time of need.
Beautiful solos were rendered by Mrs Kate Hill and Mrs Myrtle Wilde.
The benediction was offered by Hugh Findlay.
In addition to what was given last week eulogizing the life of Orson Crook we will state that he was born in Sandy, Utah, in 1862 where he lived for some time. While but a lad his parents moved to Bear Lake Valley, locating first in St. Charles, then later moved to Fish Haven, where he spent the most of his time until 1904 when he moved to Star Valley. wherever he was he made friends and was highly respected for his honesty and magnetic influence. This has been especially true during his family life everybody has observed how his children and grandchildren have flocked to his home for pleasant times. He has 48 grandchildren to his credit and they all feel keenly the loss of a kind and sympathetic father and grandfather.
We must also mention the good Orson and his wife have done for little Mary Jensen an adopted child they cared for until her death last summer. This child was never a girl to join in the fun with the other girls, but stayed home and thus became a great comfort to her foster parents. They taught her and cared for her as the did their own children and she respected them for it. He has gone to receive the reward many of us would be proud of.
