Nell Viola Ray, 96, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at a local healthcare facility.

Nell was born on November 27, 1920 in St. Joseph, Missouri to the late Ernest and Eleise (Heyde) Hodgden.

Mrs. Ray worked as a psychiatric aid for the St. Joseph State Hospital for over twenty years. She also had a love for music and taught piano lessons.

Nell was a devoted and faithful member of First Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Robert. She was a nature and animal lover.

Nell married Robert Ray on February 14, 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 26, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Ann Ray-Johnson; brother, Tom Hodgden; sisters, Ernestine Hibler, Rachel Morton and Dorothy Dillon.

Mrs. Ray is survived by her sisters, Anna Webb and Jacqueline Krogmeier; grandchildren, Amy Willeke (Craig) and Eric Nelson (Kim); numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services 1:00 PM Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends 4 to 6 pm Sunday at our chapel. Private Family Interment Mt. Auburn Cemetery at a later date.
