Edward was the 5th child of James Petty and Mary Catherine Gray Apperson. He never married. Edward and his brother Lloyd were fond of sports such as horse racing and baseball and would play ball in the pasture in front of the house on weekends. His father disapproved. The two brothers and their friends would get on their horses and run races about the pasture and they spent considerable time pitching horseshoes.
Edward became ill from typhoid fever late in 1883 and was sick a long time. He was delerious when he died on December 8, 1883.
