George M. "Knobby" Gebensleben, of Hanover, entered into God's eternal care August 14, 2008, with his loving family by his side.

He was the son of the late F. Walter and Mary R. (Miller) Gebensleben.

Knobby graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1945 and was a member of one of the most feared Nighthawk football teams that went 9-0-1 and won the old Central Penn Title. He always enjoyed sports and was instrumental in the Hanover Industrial Golf League at South Hills Golf Club for many years.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II with Troop 8th Constabulary Squadron 11th Regiment. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, as well as the Good Conduct Medal.

George was a letter carrier for the Hanover Post Office for over 27 years until his retirement in 1974. He was often referred to as the "Whistling Mailman". Knobby enjoyed spending time with his family, going camping with his children when they were younger, and especially being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Hanover Community Church, the Hanover Eagles, and NARFE.

George was the loving husband of Mary L. (Hawkins) Gebensleben, to whom he was married 47 years and surviving, in addition to Mary, are four children, M. Leidy Fogle and wife, Connie of Austin, TX, Debbie E. Hummel and husband, Donald of Westminster, MD, Rosemary L. Young and husband, Lee of Hanover, and Sally R. Gebensleben of Schroon Lake, NY; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles H. Gebensleben.
