During the First World War, he served as a private in the Fourth Army Corps and served in the Army of Occupation in Germany in 1918 and 1919. After the war, he engaged in the building business and was elected as a Democratic Congressman from Pennsylvania, serving from 1944 to 1947, and from 1949 until his death in 1956.
