John Hooke was born about 1607 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. His parents were John and Alice (Thompson) Hooke. They were married August 9, 1605 at St. Peter Mancroft in Norwich, England. Spiritually moved by the pastor John Robinson, they joined the Separatist Church and moved to Leiden, Holland. John Hooke's father died in Leiden, and his mother remarried to Henry Gallant. On January 8, 1619, Henry and Alice had John (then 12 years old)become the apprentice to the tailor Isaac Allerton. The following year, Isaac brought John along with him aboard the Mayflower. He died of illness that first winter.
