Thomas English was hired by the Pilgrims to man the Shallop, a small sea vessel that they would use in exploration. He would aid them in expeditions and other tasks with the agreement that he would return to England when the Mayflower departed April 1621. Sadly he never made it back. Perhaps months of trudging through waist deep freezing water was too much for even the most able-bodied adventurer. It is speculated that he may have been friends with passenger John Allerton. William Bradford noted that the two died around the same time.
