Very little is known about Richard Clarke. From William Bardford's writings we know that he was an adult man who was not part of John Carver's religious separatists and that he died shortly after arrival due to sickness. What many do not realize is that half of the Mayflower passengers were not "pilgrims", but rather hard working men in search of a better future. A future that promised the opportunity to posses one's own lands, something that was impossible for one to do in England. Or perhaps Richard Clarke was a merchant lured in by the opportunity to trade the plentiful resources of the New World. It is not known what sacrifices he made when he set sail on the Mayflower. Many sold all that they owned and left behind a wife and children. It is not known if Richard Clarke has any surviving descendants.
