Birth: Sep. 12, 1849
Montgomery County
Ohio, USA
Death: May 11, 1924
San Francisco
San Francisco County
California, USA

Louis Philip Brant was born September 12, 1849, in Ohio, and at the age of 19 years and 10 months was admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N. Y., Class of 1873, from which he was graduated June 13, 1873 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 21st Infantry.

He served on frontier duty at Ft. Colville, Ft. Walla Walla, and Ft. Vancouver, Wash., and resigned from the Army on March 31, 1876.

After three years as a civilian, however, he rejoined the Army on Aug. 7, 1879 and served nearly twenty more years: at Ft. Meade, S. D., and at various stations in Texas, Arizona, and California, as well as a brief stint as Recruiting Officer in Geneva, NY in 1885. He fought in South Dakota in the Sioux Campaign, Dec. 1890 and Jan. 1891. His last command was of Company A, 1st Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco.

In the Spanish-American War he served as Assistant to the Depot Quartermaster at the Tampa Port of Embarkation, but was retired from active service for disability in January, 1899 with the rank of Captain.

He spent his retirement in Alameda and San Francisco, Calif., and died in the latter town on May 11, 1924, aged 74.

NB: His tombstone is notably in error: he was indeed born in 1849, not 1859 as carved. (It will be noted that had he been born in 1859, he would have been at most 10 years old when admitted to the Military Academy.)
