"Philip Hiram Edward Koontz was born near Lexington, North Carolina, February 23, 1866, the son of Catherine and Philip H. Koontz. His parents came to Kansas in 1869 when he was a small boy and locatd near parker.
Ed, as he was known by his people and friends, was married to Miss Bertha Stark on March 4, 1902. They have lived in or near Parker practically all their married life. He operated a shoe repair shop in his home, gardened and was an expert with bees. Being a cripple, some of his work was difficult for him, but he never complained and continued his labors as long as his health permitted.
For the past several years he had been invery poor health and on August 5th underwent a very serious operation at the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas ity, where he died at 6:30, Saturday, August 10 being 80 years 5 months and 17 days old. He is survived by his widow and three daughters: Mrs. Hilda Jo Flippin of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Pansy Worthington of Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Pauline Worthington of Mound City, and two sons, Donald Philip Koontz of Parker, Dale Edward Koontz of Osawatomie and ten grandchildren.
One sister, Mrs. Mary Atherton of Dexter, Kans., and two brothers, Wade Koontz of McLeod, Montana, and Harry Koontz of Los Angeles, Calif., also survive, besides nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends who will miss him. Funeral services were held at the Parker Methodist church at 2 o'clock, Wednesday, August 14th. Rev. Max Barnes officiating, assisted by Rev. E. M. Nunnely. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mann, accompanied by Mrs. Carl Prentice. Interment was in the Quaker cemetery."
