U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States, in 1763 and settling in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, he served as a Captain in the Cumberland County Associators, during the Revolution. He was a member of the council of censors in 178, served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, (1784-87), was a member of the Pennsylvania State supreme executive council, (1789-90) and served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1790-91). In 1791, he was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Second and Third Congresses, reelected as a Republican to the Fourth and Fifth Congresses, serving until 1799. After his term, he was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1799-1802) and elected as a Republican to the Eighth through the Fourteenth Congresses, serving (1803-17). Because he was most the senior representative in years of service, he was the first man to be awarded that honorary title, “Father of the House”. He died in retirement at the age of 80.
