Benjamin Adkins Dies at Hospital

Benjamin H. Adkins, 74, of 2406 Maple street died about 9 p.m. Saturday at Bartholomew county hospital after a serious illness of about one day. He was the husband of Merle Garrison Adkins and had been in ill health about 10 years.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Yeaton at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Barkes and Inlow funeral home. Burial will be at Liberty cemetery in Martinsville. Personal may call at the funeral home.

Mr. Adkins, a member of the First Christian church here, was born Nov. 23, 1889, in Morgan county. He was the son of the late William and Julia McDaniel Adkins. Miss Elsie Dean Long, whom he married in 1910, preceded him in death in 1929 and he married Miss Merle Garrison in January, 1945.

Mr. Adkins was a supervisor with the Terre Haute, Indianapolis and Eastern traction company for many years, then continued in work with the Public Service company of Indiana. He retired in 1954.

Surviving are the wife; five sons, the Rev. Ralph Adkins of Indianapolis, Roy Adkins of 1947 Union street, Charles Adkins of 2682 Lafayette avenue, Marvin Adkins of 2109 Union street, and Melvin Adkins of Ontario, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Walter Dixon of Long Beach, Calif.

Also surviving are a brother, Robert Adkins of Martinsville and five sisters, Mrs. Paul Bryant and Mrs. George McPherson of Martinsville, Mrs. Theodore McLaughlin and Mrs. E. H. Dill of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Daisy Kidwell of Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
