Through available historical documentation, it is believed that Alonzo is the son of Amanda "Mandy" Payne, a mulatto women and former slave of Dr. G.W. Robards of Morehouse Parish, and Thomas Payne, Dr. Robards' overseer.
1870 Census lists Alonzo Payne as 19.
1880 Census lists Alonzo has changed his last name to Olive and he is 28 years old.
