Johnstown Tribune, May 29, 1917:

The Rev. Thomas J. Barkley, D. D., a native of Somerset County, who has relatives in Johnstown, died May 22 at the home of his daughter, Mars. Charles H. Dunkan, at Gettysburg He was in his 84th year. Mr. Barkley was a brother of Mrs. Maria Lavely of 752 Thomas Ave., 6th Ward and William Barkley of Morrellville. He preached in St. John's Reformed Church, this city a number of times in the last ten years. Dr. Barkley was a graduate of Heidleberg University, Tiffin, O; and of the Theological Seminary class of 1860. He was in the active ministry of the Reformed Church in the United States for 56 years. He began his ministry at Delmont, Westmoreland County and served as pastor of Second Greensburg GraceChurch, Pittsburgh and Trinity Church, Gettysburg. Owing to ill health, he relinquished the active work of the pastorate in October 1915 and was elected pastor emeritus. During his ministry at Gettysburg, the membership doubled and that of the Sunday school increased four-fold. Dr. Barkley was called to serve in positions of honor and trust in the church at large. For several terms he was a member of the Home Mission Board of General Synod. He served for 25 years as stated clerk and treasurer of Gettysburg classis and at the time of his death he was president of the Hoffman Orphanage at Littlestown. His funeral took place in Trinity Reformed Church where he ministered so many years. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.
