Born in New York.
He died in an airplane accident in France aged 22 years. He is believed to have been the first Rochester man to die in service during World War I, although he was off duty at the time of his death. He was the grandson of renowned Civil War surgeon and tuberculosis expert Dr. William S. Ely
There is a memorial to him in the family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA.
