Celia (Selia) Delmoth Henson
(January 1848 – February 12, 1919),
nicknamed "Selie" or "Celie", was born in Georgia, as were both of her parents, Abraham Eason and Mary Eason.
Several entertaining stories that have been passed down through generations of Selia's descendants attempt to offer an explanation of her life and maybe more important, her very unusual name. Depending on which relative of Selie's you ask, you'll likely find a slight variation in spelling and pronunciation. All versions are long and so unusual that her name has been a popular discussion during her life and so many years after. According to one of her great-grandaughters (my grandmother) and several other distant family, her name might be found with any of the following spellings:
"Celie Selewine Ry O Delmoth"
"Cely Censeyi O Delma"
"Celie Sinjuwine Rio Delmoth".
Abraham Eason (1799 - 1866)
Mary Eason (1806 - 1864)
James L. Henson (1842 - 1887)
Mary Alevia Henson Helton (1861 - 1909)*
Moses A Henson (1872 - 1961)*
