COPIED FROM ANCESTRY

He was baptized Louis Carroll Thomas Crosby, but he referred to himself as Louis Crosby, Jr. He was killed at Pointe Ah Soucisse, across Bayou Lafourche from Golden Meadow, late Saturday afternoon, 6 June 1891, at a party following the wedding of his niece Rosalie Lee and Charles Callais. Louis Crosby got into an argument with young Ovide Cheramie, a groomsman and brother-in-law of the groom. Ovide's older brother Lucien Cheramie intervened. Words were exchanged, and Crosby and Cheramie each accused the other of lying. Crosby punched Cheramie in the face. Cheramie drew his pistol from his pocket and fatally shot Crosby..

Many witnesses at the inquest and preliminary hearing said Crosby hit Cheramie before Cheramie drew his pistol and shot and killed Crosby. According to the testimony of most of the witnesses, Crosby also drew a pistol, but his shot went wild, wounding Ovide Cheramie and another wedding guest..

Louis Crosby, Jr., was buried the next day in a coffin made by Mathieu Callais, the father of the groom. He was buried in the Crosby Family Cemetery at Leeville where his father had been buried in 1887..

Lucien Cheramie was tried in October of 1891 and found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder, and sentenced to four years in prison. (He did not serve out his term, however. The actual trial testimony has not yet been found.).

According to historian and genealogist Paul Chiquet of the Lafourche Parish Public Library, Emelie Baudoin Crosby had a falling out with Crosby's brother-in-law Isaac "Jim" Griffin. Griffin did not defend Crosby at the inquest, hearing, and subsequent trial to the extent Emelie thought he should, and she wanted nothing more to do with him. Since Griffin and his wife Laura (Louis, Jr.,'s sister) had established the Crosby Cemetery in Leeville, Emelie had her late husband's body moved when she was legally permitted to do so. She and her children also moved away from Leeville.).

On 5 November 1892, Louis Carroll Thomas Crosby was re-interred in the cemetery at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Larose. .

Clifton Theriot, the archivist at Nicholls State U., has provided a transcript of the inquest, preliminary hearing, and judge's order. .
