He graduated from Honey Grove High School, 28 May 1926. He attended Tarleton Junior College, Stephenville, TX, for two years. While at Tarleton, he helped construct the rock fence around the College. He then went to the University of Oklahoma where he earned a BS (1931) and MS (1938) in Geology. He was a Geologist for the Turner Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. He was based out of Ardmore OK. He worked long hours, was away from home weeks at a time. His health declined, he was chronically fatigued, had bad headaches, and frequent memory losses. In 1943, because of his health problems, he and his family moved to a ranch some 6 miles NW of Graford TX in Palo Pinto Co. where he became foreman of the Gauldin Ranch (~5000 acres, 300-400 mother cows). His medical problem was not diagnosed until some 10 years later; he had hypoglycemia. With proper diet his condition was controlled, and he essentially became a new man. After retiring as a rancher, and at the age of 79, he was appointed in 1985 by the County Judge to fill the vacancy of County Commissioner Precinct 2, Palo Pinto Co. TX.

He was a member of several local and state boards: Selective Service Board 1969; Member of School Board Graford ISD for 12 yrs; Member of Lions Club; Member of Palo Pinto Co Appraisal Board; The Fire District Board; Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service, and FmHA (Farmers Home Administration).

Bela was initiated into the Masonic Lodge in Graford, Texas on 3 December 1946. While a member he served as: Junior Deacon (1949), Senior Deacon (1950). Junior Warden (1951) and Senior Warden (1952). He was a Mason in good standing at the time of his death.
