Born in Detroit Michigan, the Son of Walter Maeder & Nina Southworth with only initials for his first and middle names he went by the nickname of "Jack".
He was living with his father after his parents divorce and at the age of 8 he was removed from his father by the Children's Aid Society and placed into Foster Care in Howell, Michigan where he remained until he was released to his own resources by the Children's Aid Society at the age 17.
At age 18 (1943) he joined the US Navy and became a Seabee in the 33rd Special CB Battalion serving in places like China until he was mustered out in 1946. Four months later he joined the Army and was assigned to the 45th Mechanized Cavalry and later the 3rd Cavalry, 1st Battalion, Company C.
After his discharge from the army he served as a police officer with the Springport Michigan police department and when the conflict started up in Viet Nam he re-enlisted and was severely wounded on his first fire mission for which he was awarded the Purple Heart medal.

He was not aware of and never met his brother Gerald Binkley and although aware of his half-brother and half-sister he was never able to locate them.
He lived out his life in Springport, Michigan.
