Death: Mar. 31, 2003

Professional Football Player. He was an All-American at Holy Cross before World War II interrupted his college career. When he returned, he made All-American twice on two undefeated Notre Dame teams. In 1946, he was the winner of the first Outland Trophy awarded to the nation's top lineman. He was taken in the first round of the 1946 NFL draft by the New York Giants, but forced a trade by insisting on playing for the Chicago Bears. In his eight years with the Bears from 1948 through 1955, he was named all-pro at three different positions--offensive tackle, defensive tackle, and linebacker. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975. (bio by: Mel Bashore)
