Jason Elliott Merrell was born on June 25,1968, in Versailles, Kentucky to Lee and Maureen Merrell.
He died July 23, 2007 at the age of 39.
Jason began school in Washington State, moved to Carson City, NV in 1981 and graduated from Carson City High in 1986.
He attended the University of Nevada Reno, graduating in 1992 with a degree in Natural Resource Management.
Jason was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity as was his father. He held several offices.
While attending college Jason began fighting wild land fire for the Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District Fire Program. He began as a seasonal firefighter and continued fighting wild land fire for 13 years. He worked in such positions as Hot Shot Crew, Assistant Helitaek Manager, and Engine Captain, to name a few.
Jason joined the Reno Fire Department in September of 2002. He was most recently a firefighter at Station 6. In addition to structural fighting, Jason taught classes in wild land fire fighting for the Reno Fire Department and Truckee Meadows Community College. He was a member of the Urban Search and Rescue Team. He represented Reno Fire Department on an interagency incident command team acting as a Division Group Supervisor.
Jason was a true Nevada man. He had a passion for the out of doors. He loved to hunt, fish, hike, and camp with his many friends as well as skiing and snowboarding. He was always working on his golf game!
He maintained lifelong friendships with high school and college friends, fraternity brothers, and fellow firefighters in the Bureau of Land Management and the Reno Fire Department.
He is survived by his parents Lee and Maureen of Yuma, AZ, his brother Christopher, also of Yuma as well as extended family in Oregon and Pennsylvania.
Jason will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched. He was a kind and gentle man whose glass was always half full.
