Mary was my sister in law.
She was born, Mary Nell Heslop on 22nd October 1953,
in Barnet, London, the only child of John & Alice (nee Whincup) Heslop.
She had a happy childhood. Her Mother sadly died in 1971 and until his death in 1978, her Father was her carer.
After her Father's passing she became a resident at Champion House Cheshire Home, Calverley.
During a special holiday for the disabled she met Christopher Bradley, who was a resident in a Cheshire Home, in Crawley, Sussex. Despite the distance between them, they corresponded via email. In November 1980 they announced their engagement, and married in 1981.
They set up home at the Seven Springs Cheshire Home, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Sadly Christopher died in 1987, but Mary continued to live at the home.
It is here that she became friends with my brother
Michael Ockenden,(1949)who was also a resident at the home.
That friendship grew, and they married on
23rd september 1992, in Tunbridge Wells.
They may both have been confined to a life in wheelchairs, but they had a very happy marriage. They were even given a specially adapted bungalow in the Cheshire Home grounds, so that they could have as much privacy as possible.
Sadly, Mary died on 19 September 2005,
in the Kent & Sussex Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, Kent,
aged 51 years.
She was cremated on Wednesday 5th October 2005, and
her ashes have been laid to rest at the
Kent & Sussex Crematorium, Tunbridge Wells, which Michael attends weekly to leave her flowers.
He also leaves flowers for our parents who are remembered there too.
A sevice of Thanksgiving for Mary's life, was held
on Thursday 3rd November 2005,
at the Pembury Baptist Church, Pembury,
Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
I'll remember you in sunshine
Its rays warming earth and sky
I'll remember you in bird's graceful wings
As they glide and flutter by
I'll remember you in the summer breeze
And in softly falling rain
I'll remember you in dark storm clouds
The rainbow's picture frame
I'll remember you in blossoms and fields
And in gentle streams that flow
I'll remember you in all that lives...
All that brings life...that grows
Moment by moment I'll remember you
You'll never be too far away
Because I'll keep you in my heart
Each and every day
