Teacher, social worker Hazel R. Braxton, a social worker in Detroit for more than 40 years, died from complications of Alzheimer's disease July 3 at her home in Henry Ford Village in Dearborn. She was 86 and had lived in Detroit until about five years ago, when she moved to Dearborn. In the 1940s, Ms. Braxton went to work for St. Peter Claver Community House in Detroit. She became its director in 1953. During that time, she also taught at the University of Detroit. In the '60s, she went to work for the Wayne County Juvenile Court for a brief time, then got a job with the Detroit Public Schools, where she supervised social work until she retired in 1984.
She was born in Cleveland, grew up there and graduated from Cleveland Central High School. After moving to Detroit, she lived with an aunt and went to Wayne State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree. She did graduate work at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and earned a master's degree in social work from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She sat on the boards of the Travelers Aid Society and Vista Maria School and was a member of the National Association of Social Work and the Alpha Kappa Alpha social sorority.
Survivors include four cousins. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the chapel at Henry Ford Village, 15101 Ford Road. Burial was in Detroit Memorial Park East in Warren.
