He married Mary A. Schmidt Jan. 19, 1937, at Catherine. She died June 25, 2003.
A resident of Hays, he was head pumper for Don Pratt Oil Operations for many years. Pelzel was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Hays, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include four sons, Leon Pelzel of Hays, Dave Pelzel of Ellsworth, Steve Pelzel of Larned and Jerry Pelzel of Salina; one daughter, Diana Darnell of Clovis, N.M.; two brothers, William Pelzel of Hays and James Pelzel of Wichita; seven sisters, Beatrice Haas and Irene Bollig, both of Hays, Alice Brungardt of Victoria, Clara Hetzel, Frances Koester and Edna Goetz, all of Wichita, and Marie Mermis of Great Bend; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Pelzel.
Parish vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial with military honors by Hays VFW will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. Friends can call from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, both at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Research, in care of the funeral home.
