Carroll F. Gushlaw was born June 24, 1924, in Norfolk, son of Howard and Mildred Despaw Gushlaw. He attended Potsdam area schools. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Pauline J. Lockwood on April 15, 1943, in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, Watertown, with the Rev. Dr. Frederick A. Miller officiating.

After World War II, the couple lived in Watertown, then moved to Sackets Harbor, where they lived for eight years. They moved to the Potsdam area in 1954 and to Ogdensburg in 1956. Mrs. Lockwood died Dec. 29, 1983.

Mr. Gushlaw was a welder for Baildon Manufacturing Co., Lisbon, for more than 20 years, retiring 13 years ago. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2936 and of a Longshoremen's Union local. After his retirement he worked for five years for Park Newspapers, delivering newspapers.

He was an enthusiastic New York Giants fan and enjoyed professional wrestling.

He is survived by two sons, Edward, Richville, and Thomas, Phelps; five daughters, Mrs. Clayton (Pamela) Trombley, Rensselaer Falls, Mrs. Daniel (Darlene) Kinch, Ogdensburg, Mrs. James (Debra) Taylor, Lisbon, Mrs. Michael (Robin) Thayer, DeKalb, and Mrs. Roy (Kim) Hatcher, Mira Loma, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Weaver, Potsdam, and Mrs. Francis (Diane) Bond, Norfolk; five brothers, Raymond, New York City, Larry, Florida, Richard, Troy, Anthony, Norwood, and James, Rhode Island; a companion, Sharon Lovely, Ogdensburg; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Three sisters, Bessie Bond, Virginia Weaver and Ruth Weaver, and a brother, Oscar, died before him.
