Jo Howard Alcorn was born in Ray County, Missouri, on September 19, 1886, the son of William H. and Irene G. Alcorn, where the senior Alcorn was a pioneer farmer and livestock man. Joe Alcorn's schooling was in his native state, having attended high school in the town of Hardin, St. Charles Military College in St. Charles, and Spaulding Commercial College in Kansas City.
The family came to California in 1908, locating in Hanford, Kings County, where Jo, in order to qualify himself for the business in which he is now engaged, served an apprenticeship with a funeral director, working nights, for which he received no compensation. He made his living expenses by working in a clothing store during the day, which was owned by the late R. B. McGinnis. Subsequently, he became manager and part owner of the B. B. McGinnis store in Merced, continuing until 1932, when he became a partner of J. Vernon Ivers in the Ivers-Alcorn Mortuary. This is one of the most favorably known businesses of its kind in the San Joaquin Valley, and both Mr. Ivers and Mr. Alcorn are known for the careful, conscientious service which they render. An interesting feature of their mortuary is the bell in the chapel tower, which was brought around the Horn to California in the early days, and was formerly used in a church in the Mother Lode Country.
In addition to their Merced business, Messrs. Ivers and Alcorn are also the principal owners of the Mariposa Funeral Home in Mariposa.
Mr. Alcorn has taken a conspicuous part in several important Merced organizations. He is a prominent member of the Rotary Club, and is a Past Master of Yosemite Lodge No. 99, F. and A. M., and a Past Exalted Ruler of the local Elks Lodge, and an Honorary Life Member. He is also a Past Patrol of the Mercedes Chapter No. 126, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Eagles.
He was married in 1914 to Miss Floy Jette Gant, who was also born in Ray County, Missouri. She is a Past Patrol of Mercedes Chapter, No. 126 Order of the Eastern Star, and an active member of several sections of the Merced's Women's Club. Mr. and Mrs. Alcorn have two children: Frances Fern, with the Bank of America in Merced, and William G., a student at Fresno State College.
Mr. Alcorn's favorite hobbies are hunting and raising bird dogs.
