|Birth: ||Jun. 26, 1931|
|Death: ||Apr. 30, 2003|
Born to Carl Edgar & Grace Bethel (Stone) Williams of Evansville, Indiana, Douglas was their 2nd child of 5 children and the oldest son. He did not finish his education, having dropped out of school at the age of 14, and worked for several years before joining the United States Marine Corp in the early 1950s. It was during this time he learned of his love for cooking.
After he was discharged from the USMC, he married Carolyn Marie Shoptaugh and had six children - three boys and three girls: Lawrence, Dennis, Brian, Vicki, Deborah, and Rebecca. Carolyn & Doug divorced in the mid 1960s.
On April 11, 1969, Douglas married Laura Ruth Brooks. They divorced December 4, 1973, remarried on August 10, 1974, and divorced a second, and final time, September 7, 1982 after the birth of their second daughter, BriAnna. Another daughter, Jessica, was born in 1979.
Douglas was a "jack of all trades", working mostly in construction and dry-wall businesses, but also known for mechanics and janitorial work. He was employed by the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation in Evansville, Indiana from 1978-1987. It was during this time that Douglas attended night classes to earn his G.E.D. His success in this allowed him to gain a career with the American Commercial Barge Line company. His choice of a career was as a barge's cook, and he would be gone for 30 days and home two weeks. He retired from this profession in 1995.
It should be mentioned that Doug had another wife, whom he also married twice, named Wilma Jane. The exact dates of their marriages and divorce are unknown, however, it was shortly before his retirement from ACBL that Jane & Doug remarried and moved to Florida for a few years. They returned to Evansville in 1998, and at the time of his death, they were still married.
From 2000-2003, Doug lived down in the river bottoms of Weinbach Ave. with his brother. It was here that Doug suffered at heart attack the morning of April 30, 2003. He was 71 years old. His body was cremated.
There were no funeral services and a family memorial service was held for him at Burdette Park, in Evansville, on May 10, 2003.
Doug was survived by a sister, Mildred Pfingston, of Tacoma, Washington; two brothers, Donnie Williams of Bardstown, Kentucky and Wayne Williams of Evansville, Indiana. He has 15 grandchildren: Jenny, Michael, Christopher, Kevin, Matt, Brian, Jeremy, Amanda, Max, Ricky, Andrew, Nathan, Jacob, Emily, and Riley; and three great-grandchildren: Dalton, Elijah, and Nora.
