Son of Sylvester G. and Harriet C. (Fisher) Whitcomb. He was the second of their eleven children. His siblings were Mary E., Solomon or Solon S., Albert Merton, Charles E., Carlos F., Andrew C., Willard Myron, Myron, Herbert A., and Hattie A. Whitcomb.

Lyman was married twice. His first wife was Jane (Glidden)-(1845-1875), whom he married on 25 December 1867 in Craftsbury, Orleans, Vermont. Two children were born to them: Julia Ann, and Katie I. Whitcomb.

Four years after Jane's death, Lyman remarried on 14 November 1879 to Jennie (Baker). Three children were born to them: Lizzie B., Willard L., and Merton A. Whitcomb.

In 1900, they lived in Wolcott, Vermont, where Lyman owned and operated his own farm. From at least 1904 through 1910, they were living on Elm Street in Claremont, New Hampshire. In Claremont in 1910, he was employed as a janitor for the schoolhouses.

Jennie survived him until 1923.
