Woodrow Wilson Bierly, 90, of State College died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center after a short illness. Born December 8, 1917 in Rebersburg, he was the son of the late Curtis and Mayme Bierly.

On December 20, 1952, he married Phyllis Marie Deal, who survives.

A 1938 graduate of Penn State, he began his newspaper career with the Lancaster, Pa., Intelligencer-Journal. He joined the Department of Public Information becoming News Bureau Manager at Penn State in 1945, following military service during World War II. As a reserve officer, he held an assignment from 1967 to 1974 with the Chief of Information, Department of the Army, Washington, D.C. From 1948 to 1969 he was advisor to LaVie, Penn StateÕs senior class yearbook. He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi and Alpha Delta Sigma. He was a member of State College Presbyterian Church and served as elder. Other memberships include Centre Hills Country Club and the State College Elks.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia B. Hall, and her husband, Thomas W. Hall of Port Matilda, and their children, Erin C. Hall of Arlington, Va., and Peter A. Hall of rural Port Matilda. A son, Harold W. Bierly died in 2004.

Friends will be received from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Charles J. Curley officiating.

Burial will be in Pine Hall Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church or to Camp Krislund Development Fund in care of the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W. Beaver Ave., State College, PA 16801, or the charity of the donor's choice.
