Josephus Johnson served as a private in Company I, 24th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He was a two term legislator for Johnston County (NC House of Representatives, 1889, 1907-1908), served on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, and was postmaster of Ezra Post Office, Johnston County, NC.

Mr. Josephus Johnson, of Elevation township, died of apoplexy about 3 o'clock Monday morning, February 3. He took his bed Tuesday, January 28, and did not speak any more. In April he would have been seventy-eight years old. The burial will take place today near his home at Johnson Chapel church. The funeral will be preached by his pastor Elder Johnson, of Coats, N.C. He was a member of Clement Primitive Baptist church. Mr. Johnson was one of the substantial men of the county. He had served us from this county in the Legislature at Raleigh during two different sessions. During his younger days he ran a country store and had dealings with many people in his part of the county. He was a successful farmer and a reliable man in all respects.
