The National Archive records show on July 12,1862, William enrolled in the Confederate States Army in Company F, 2nd Partisan Rangers, Mississippi Cavalry, in Pittsboro, Calhoun Co., Mississippi where he served in Ballentine's Regiment until the time of surrender in 1865.

William was the husband of Mary E. (Martin) Adams. They were married 41 years. Together they had 5 children. Emily, Eva, Della Ann, Savannah, and Neeley.
