Hendrik Lubberts Zanstra, born March 16, 1823 in Gasterland, Friesland, Netherlands, was the son of Lubbert Berends Zandstra (1798-1860) and Fouk Hendriks Hoekstra (1799-1843). According to the ships log in Salt Lake City, UT, Hendrik Lubberts Zanstra, a laborer, age 30, sailed 3rd class from Amsterdam to Philadelphia on the ship AMSTERDAM in 1854. He changed his name to Henry Louis Sanstra. He married Antje Jans deVries (Ann deFries/deFreece) on August 28, 1855 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Ann was the daughter of Jan Hendriks deVries (1792-1854) and Baukje Andries Schots (1798- ). Henry and Ann lived in Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana. By 1860 they were living with Ann's brother, Andrew deFrees, in Concord, Elkhart County, Indiana. By 1863 until 1869 they lived in Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. They moved to Grand River Township, Carroll County, Missouri in 1869. They had 12 children. Handwritten family records show Henry died on September 18, 1878, however, his gravestone shows September 5, 1877. He is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Wakenda, Carroll County, Missouri. After his death, Ann married a widowed neighbor, Philip Richhart. Ann died July 4, 1916 and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Her grave is located on the north edge of the cemetery next to the adjacent farm. It is believed Henry is buried next to her. In 1999 Henry's gravestone was found moved from his plot, leaning against the fence on the edge of the cemetery across from Ann's grave. In 2001 it was moved again but still on the edge of the cemetery. In 2016 it was found broken with a few other stones and moved farther back on the north edge of the cemetery.
Thanks to Pat Sanstra Thompson for the 1999 photograph and family research.
