When John was older he told the story of the ships crossing to America. Apparently a terrible storm came up and all aboard thought they would parish. John's mother gathered the children around her and they all prayed the Lord Prayer. This went on for hours until the storm passed. This made a great impressi no John because he told the story many times throughout his life.
John was an accomplished drawer and took up the study of architecture but did not make it his life's work. He worked as a young man for the Union Pacific Railroad and helped to build tracks across Nebraska. It was during this time that John Marin and crew members where attached by Indians. John defending his life and the lives of his coworkers shot and killed an Indian. This would bother him for the rest of his life.
He went to Illinois where he met Margaret Ann Cullens .
He married Margaret Ann Cullens June 2, 1872 in Illinois.
He moved to Kansas with his wife and 4 of their children in 1879, four more children would be born to this couple in Kansas.
He moved first to a farm south of Topeka. While clearly land with the use of dynamite an explosion hit John which took out his eye. Sometime later the family moved further west, finally settling near Luray, Kansas.
He farmed in Luray until his later years when he moved into town and ran a grocery store.
After his wife's death in 1930, his daughter Maude cared for him until his death in 1939.
