John B. "Jack" Putnam, 92, retired lieutenant colonel US Army, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Bellevue Manor. A life resident of Syracuse, he was a 1933 graduate of C.B.A., a 1937 graduate of Notre Dame and graduated in 1948 from the University of Buffalo. Jack retired as chief social worker for the Veterans Administration in Syracuse and also worked as a social worker for Onondaga County Health Dept. He was a founding member and past president of the Cavalry Club and currently served on the governing boards of Troop K and Troop D. Jack was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Gertrude Costello Putnam in 1984; a son, John Putnam II; and his sisters, Patricia Auth and Rosemary McCrohan. Surviving are his wife, Helen Marie Thibault Putnam; three daughters, Doreen Marie (Neal) McLane of Baldwinsville, Maripat (Bud) Kline of Falls Church, Virginia, Karen (Tom) Vasile of Auburn; three sons, James (Cheryl) Putnam of Liverpool, Thomas (Susan) Putnam of Westvale, Terrance (Annette) Putnam of Manlius; one brother, Patrick Putnam of Jacksonville, FL; four stepchildren, Sharon (Michael) Kawa of Syracuse, Martin (Cathy) Thibault of Virginia, Gary (Norine) Thibault of Skaneateles, Karen (Michael) Miles of Onondaga Hill; 30 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Services: Monday, 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 4782 W. Seneca Tpk. Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, Mausoleum, DeWitt. Friends may call at the Butler-Badman Funeral Home, Inc., 4504 W. Seneca Tpk. on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church or the American Cancer Society.
