Nelson community was saddened yesterday morning when the news was spread that Elda Thayer had passed to the Beyond. Although quite frail Edna was one of Nelson's active young people, always ready to "lend a hand" where service was needed and she will be greatly missed in the Sunday school and church as well as in civic organizations.
Elda Alberta Thayer was born March 27, 1911, at Nora, Nebraska, and departed this life April 11, 1934. God cultivates flowers, seemingly only for their beauty and fragrance. Thus youth dies--some in the sweet bud, some in the fuller blossom, to make heaven fair and sweeter with their immortal bloom.
Though an invalid much of her twenty-three years, her death came unexpected and to the last hour she had strong hope of recovery. She was always hopeful and patient and though she suffered much at times few were allowed to realize it.
She leaves to mourn her departure her father and mother, George D. and Cora Thayer, two sisters, Helen May Crook and Mary Marie, and three brothers, Ralph Leon, Lynn Earl, and John Dale, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cubbon with whom she has made her home most of her life and who have made every possible sacrifice they could for her sake. Many other relatives and friends mourn her going. She was preceded in death by John Woodrow, a brother who died in infancy.
In 1926 Elda accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Nelson. She loved the Church and Sunday school and was faithful as a teacher, and longed for the time that she should have sufficient strength to work in the church again. She grew to womanhood in Nelson and graduated from the Nelson high school in 1930.
Then fell upon the house a sudden gloom,
A shadow on those features fair and thin,
And softly from that hushed and darkened room,
Two angels issued, where but one went in. -- Longfellow
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church two o'clock Friday afternoon; burial at Nora cemetery (sic). The pallbearers will be Jim and Chester Bargen, John Lockwood, Ned Anderson, Dale and Ralph Gerbling (sic).
