Joseph Gregg Layne, X.N.G.H., 1016 Selby Ave., L.A.
Layne was born in Huntington, West Virginia. He moved to Pomona, California at age of four. Layne graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1903. He was a manager at the Los Angeles office of Keuffel & Esser Company of New York from 1904 to 1919. Layne was a manager of the Southwest division, Taylor Instruments Company from 1919 to 1935. From 1935 to 1947 Layne was a representative for the Southwest division of Charles Bruning Company of New York.
He was a historian for the Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles from 1947-52; research staff, Huntington Library from 1945-47; consultant in Western Americana, UCLA Library from 1952;
As a leading authority and bibliographer of Californiana, he wrote books, articles and reviews mostly about California history; president, member of board of directors, Historical Society of Southern California, and editor of its Quarterly, 1935-52; organizer, E Clampus Vitus; member, Zamorano Club, The Scribes.
He was a leading authority and bibliographer of Californiana as well as president, member of the board of directors and editor of the Quarterly for the Historical Society of Southern California and an organizer for E Clampus Vitus. His collection of papers on history projects he was involved in are stored at the UCLA Library, Department of Special Collections. It consists of E Clampus Vitus ephemera, correspondence, literary manuscripts, and working notes pertaining to California history. Much of the correspondence relates to Historical Society of Southern California business.
