Clarence was the son of George Chapman and Sarah (Sally)Mitchell of Clayton, CA.
Clarence was a member of the Third Division with Gen Liggett's 18th Field Artillery in France during WWI. He was gassed during his service and returned home in 1918 and went to AZ and NV deserts for his health. He worked for a while as a cowboy on NV ranches. He was then elected Sheriff in Lovelock, NV in 1928. He made many arrests and usually operated alone. He was only shot once during his service, but involved in many shoot-outs. He was arresting two suspects when one man kicked him in the stomach and he had to shoot one and wound the other. Sheriff Chapman died on the way to the hospital from a stomach hemorrhage.
