The son of James Lloyd & Eliza Jane Clark Hufford.
Born in Indiana, David's family was in Wapello Co., Iowa, by 1856. His father was deaf and mute, supporting his family as a cooper. By 1860, the family was in Linn County in Kansas Territory. David enlisted with the 15th Kansas Volunteers on October 17, 1863; he mustered out on October 19, 1865. By 1870, he was married and the father of a 4-year-old daughter, Cora; the young family was living in Crawford County, Kansas, and David was farming. By 1880, they were in McDonald County, Missouri, where David also farmed. By 1900, David and his wife had moved on to Cherokee County, Kansas; their only child had died. David was 56 and working as a day laborer.
