Name has been spelled Springsteel, Springstead, or Springstein as well as Springsteen.
John Springsteen was born about 1782 on Long Island in Queens County, New York per 1850 US Federal Census for Hancock Co., Indiana. The ancestors of his father, Abraham Springsteen (1755-1844) were Dutch immigrants to Long Island/New York, arriving around 1652. His mother, Abigail FURMAN abt 1755-d. bef 1821), had ancestors in New Amsterdam as early as 1633, or as early as 1620.
There was a John Springsteen listed in the 1800 Federal census in Hempstead, Long Island, Queens, New York, and this may be the correct John. We have not found him in the 1810 census.
John Springsteen married Mary LOGAN, b. in PA per the 1850 census, by 1820 when son Jefferson was born in Harrison, probably in Hamilton County, Ohio. The 1820 census, which enumerates him as "John Springsteel" in Hamilton Co., OH, and those up to 1840 have individuals that we are unsure of who they are, so they may be additional children as some researchers believe there were 11 in the family.
John and Mary's next known son Abraham Springsteen was born in 1824 most likely in Ohio, and the family is next found in the 1830 census in Cincinnati, where daughter Sarah Emily Springsteen was born on 16 October 1830. Daughter Missouri E. Springsteen was b. in OH about 1834.
Son Jefferson (who had run away from home when very young) had induced his father to visit him in Indianapolis, Indiana, around 1835-7; that visit may have precipitated the move to Hancock County which was just outside Indianapolis. Daughter Eliza/Analiza Springsteen was born 16 May 1839 in Buck Creek, Hancock, Indiana. John and Mary were found in 1840 in Lawrence Ward 1 in Marion Co., IN, with one person employed in manufacturing again, presumably John.
John and Mary were living with their three daughters (Sarah, Missouri, and Eliza) at the 1850 census, still in Buck Creek. John was listed as a carpenter with $800 in real estate.
A John Springsteen lived in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1860 and was listed as b. NY. He was 76, so b. about 1784. His occupation was Sashmaker (a highly skilled job making the frames of windows). Two women by the name of DeWolf were living/boarding? with him in 1860: Agnes, age 56 and Susan, age 30; they were both listed as tailoresses. John's real estate was valued at $4,000, with a personal estate of $200. Agnes owned real estate worth $1,000. Possibly the ladies (mother and daughter?) cooked and cleaned for the elderly widower in exchange for their board.
The 1865 Indianapolis City Directory included a John Springsteen who lived on Market Street but had no occupation listed. This may have been the elder John Springsteen, age 83, not his grandson John who was living with Jefferson. We have found no later records for John other than the obituary.
